"Excellent Pre-op, but disappointed by smokers"

About: Basildon University Hospital

This morning I had a Pre-op in the Cardiothoracic Centre prior to a procedure scheduled for the 3rd September. Although the Pre-op did take a bit longer than expected, the care was excellent, I had all of my questions answered and the waiting room was adequate. As I left the CTC, there were staff and and patients smoking at the back of the "old building". As I walked past the Renal Unit on my way home there were staff smoking. Just past this point is a big sign saying that the whole hospital site is no smoking. I know you can't really enforce the no smoking policy on the patients, but surely you can on staff? It is a hospital after all!!

Firstly may we apologise for the delay in posting a response on this site to your comments.

We are glad to hear that you were pleased with the care and treatment you received for your pre-op and we hope that your subsequent procedure went well.

We note your comments about smoking on hospital grounds.

It is a challenge to ensure no-smoking on sites across the whole NHS and can confirm the Trust is currently working with Provide, a community interest company supporting health lifestyle services, including smoking cessation, and staff have been reminded of the no-smoking policy.

We would like to thank you for your comments and assure you we are doing everything possible to resolve this issue.
