"Correct diagnosis of mystery illness"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Acute assessment unit Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Cardiology Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Rheumatology General practices in Forth Valley

(as a service user),

I had been having mysterious lumps and bumps on my hands and forearms plus repeated visits to a&e with my throat closing over, face and tongue swellings ....always in pain somewhere. Was discharged from ENT months before as thankfully nothing sinister going on there and same with dermatology.

I had emergency steroids in the house but even these failed to keep my throat open.Received intravenous antihistimines which worked and Dr Beckett came along and asked me a series of questions then said 'Let me think about this' ..he had bloods taken and voila!

I received a call from him the following week telling me I had vasculitis and referred me to Dr Blyth, rheumatology! Dr Bltyh was able to name my lumps I showed him from photos and has put me on a drug to try and combat everything that is going on.

I am extremely grateful to the care and concern I have been given by my own GP Dr Nelson(Camelon medical practice) who diagnosed my myasthenia gravis leading to discovery of a thymoma entering my heart! Thanks to Dr Neumann(FVR Hospital Larbert)for his referal to Mr Brackenberry (cardio/thoracic surgeon in Edinburgh) on that occasion and now once more the NHS has been wonderful in trying to get to the bottom of another rare auto immune condition!

So many, many thanks to Dr Beckett(FVRHospital)the Sherlock Holmes of acute medicine and to Dr Blyth for the drug that I hope will mean the end of all this weird and fascinating carry on in my body :D

Dear Galadrial 58

On behalf of the Acute Medicine team at FVRH thanks so much for your kind feedback. I know that they (and I) really do appreciate it. I'm really pleased to hear that you're doing so well.

Diagnosing rarer conditions can be a real challenge, especially in a busy Acute Medicine Unit, but it is one of the many things that makes our job so fantastic. I'm really happy that I could be of service.

I hope you continue to improve, and thanks again for your feedback.

Dr Dan "Sherlock" Beckett

NHS Forth Valley
