I have suffered with severe depression and anxiety for about 23 years. In April 2016 I had a slow heart rate but had no contact from my GP. I then saw another GP who made a referral and confirmed I would be ok to go on holiday. I spent 4 days in hospital whilst away. I then collapsed in the street with a heart rate of 25, which led to a pacemaker being fitted. The day after the operation I reported I still felt dizzy but was told it would settle down. This always happen to mental health patients, the attitude seems to be “there there dear it’s just your nerves”. I began taking my own blood pressure readings and showed very low, marked differences from sitting to standing. Armed with my readings I saw yet another GP but this time she showed concern and referred me to cardiology and neurology. After tests and examinations I was diagnosed with Multiple System Atrophy. This is a very rare, terminal condition with no treatment. Most doctors haven’t heard of it, don’t know anything about it and refuse to make themselves aware. If I need to go to the GP I have to explain the condition and then my time is up. They will only deal with one problem per appointment so I have to make another appointment in 3or 4 weeks time and suffer in the meantime. An example is when I went for my flu jab I asked about a pneumonia vaccination because MSA patients are prone to it. The nurse said she’d let me know but she didn’t. The next GP appointment I asked again she said she’d look it up - she didn’t. So I wrote a snotty letter to the practice manager, she wrote one back but I did get the vaccination. I’m now having problems with swallowing and asked for meds in Liquid or crushable form. It took one GP and 3 pharmacist calls to do it.
Today the pharmacist rang re a meds review regarding the Royal Hallamshire at Sheffield.
Today is 15-08-2018 and my appointment is 25-09-2019. 6 weeks is a very long time for an appointment. Either it is such low priority that it's not worth my time, or they are unaware that I have one terminal condition and one very debilitating condition. I’ve had enough fighting and explaining, I just give up.
"No appointment"
