"Lack of suitable Parking"

About: University Hospital Wishaw

(as a service user),

I have had to attend various appointments at wishaw general hospital, today I was at the Parkinsons clinic and as usual there is no disability parking spaces to be had. Due to my condition my mobility is fairly poor and I can walk only short distances unaided, today I had to park In an area that didn't cause any obstruction to other vehicles and yet again received a sticker despite displaying a blue badge, I'm sure with a blue badge parking on double yellow lines is permitted for a period in such circumstances. Perhaps staff at WGH would be better doing something about the able bodied who use disability spaces not to mention those who flout the smoking policy instead of targeting the already vulnerable. It is also worth noting that there are approximately 5 or 6 disabled spaces at the front of the maternity entrance to the hospital despite there being no access to the building here; perhaps it would again be more beneficial to have such spaces near building access points.

I am sorry that you were not able to find a parking bay when you visited the hospital for your appointment. Unfortunately, we face an ongoing problem with able bodied motorists abusing disabled parking spaces.

In February 2014 the amount of disabled parking bays at the hospital were increased to a total of 73. The recommended amount of disabled spaces for the hospital is 63. There are a total of 1263 parking spaces within Wishaw General Hospital and disabled spaces are generally recommended at 5% of overall parking provision. The percentage of disabled car parking spaces at the hospital is 5.8%.

Following feedback from blue badge holders, disabled parking bays have also been relocated nearer to the entrances to the hospital. We would like to reassure you that we treat all matters relating to disabled car parking with the utmost importance.

Regular checks are undertaken by our security/car parking staff who apply adhesive notices advising drivers that they have parked inappropriately. They will also speak to drivers to advise them that they are parked inappropriately.

Although the security/car parking staff have to apply notices in line with hospital policy, we have taken the opportunity to remind them to use a more pragmatic approach where short term, parking does not obstruct other road users or pedestrians.
