"Outpatient reception is still crowded"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres

(as the patient),

I am truly disappointed to see that plans to change the layout of main outpatients at hairmyres have not gone ahead as stated the reception is still in the same place and it is still cramped and over crowded and we continue to line up in front of consultant rooms in order to book in

I had noted that on at least 2 posts it was mentioned that the reception would be moved within  a few months I am saddened to see no changes have even been started

also has no one ever done a fire audit on the reception area for its size/ accessibility and the fact that extension cords are daisy chained ?

Dear Yaz87,

Thanks for taking the time to post the feedback above and apologies for taking a few days to get back to you.

I'm really sorry that we have been unable to effect the changes to the outpatient waiting area that had been indicated in previous posts. We have spent some time looking at the various options available to us within the existing layout of the department. Our plan is to relocate part of the waiting area which will allow better management of the queue and crucially will mean patients no longer need to queue next to consulting room doors.

Thank you also for raising the concerns regarding the daisy chaining of electrical equipment and the safety of the people in the department in the event of a fire.

I visited the department on Friday morning with a colleague from the our Health and Safety department. While there, and subsequently, I have discussed the issues you raised with the staff in the department who carry out fire checks on a daily basis. At that point we could not see any evidence of daisy chained extension cords but I did take the opportunity to remind the team of the risks relating to such an arrangement.

I look forward to being able to update in the future as to the success of our attempts to better manage the queue in the outpatient department and would certainly welcome further feedback from you at this point regarding your experiences of the changes we intend to make.

Kind Regards,

Cameron
