"In patient stay"

About: Arrowe Park Hospital / General surgery

My husband was admitted to Arrowe Park hospital on Saturday 11th August 2018 with severe chest pains. He was admitted through A&E where history was taken,

ECG tests and bloods done and new medication given. He is 50 years old and had a triple bypass 18 months ago so has a history of heart problems. He was admitted on to the short stay ward initially where further blood tests and ECG tests were done. We were told that the tests 'seemed ok' but only the Drs were able to read and comment on this officially and they weren't available. Since being given the medication in A&E my husband did not have any further pain. We were told that the medication he was given was 'specific heart medication' which indicated that there was a problem with his heart. Whilst on the short stay ward we were not given any further information and although my husband asked to go home we were told that he needed to stay in to see the heart specialist on Monday. He was then moved at 2am Tuesday to ward 14. We explained that he needed a sick note to cover his absence from work on the Monday and any further days as he has recently been off work with a bout of D&V, which we were told was probably related to the heart issues. We were told that he would be issued a sick note on discharge covering all time in hospital. He saw the heart specialist on Monday who said that he was happy for him to be discharged but further blood tests were needed before he left plus he would need further tests In outpatient to find out what was happening. It took untill 9pm to complete blood tests and get results back to be discharged.

On discharge there were no Drs available to complete the sick note so I was asked to return to the ward the following morning (Tuesdsy 14th) to collect the sick note. I phone the ward this morning (Tuesday 14th) at 9am to check that the sick note was ready. I was informed that the Drs had not done their rounds so could I phone back at 11am. I phoned back again at 11am to be told the same but that they had the sick note in their position but it still needed signing. The nurse asked me to phone back again at 1pm. I did this and again was told to phone back at 4pm as the Drs were still not available. My husband was becoming quite concerned as no-one had said whether he was ok to return to work or whether he would need some recuperation time. We were just told that the sick note would be prepared for him but no indication about what it would say (I did ask this specifically). When I phoned back again at 4pm I was told that the Drs would not sign the sick note as they felt my husband was fit for work. No-one had told us this. I was told that we had to see our go if he wanted a sick note. I am appalled at the serious lack of communication and information sharing both for my husband and between staff from A&E and the wards. If we had been told sooner that my husband needed to see the gp we could have arranged this sooner. This is unacceptable and has caused unnecessary stres
