"Unacceptable conduct"

About: Birch Hill Hospital

I have visited my loved one several times in moorside unit and have asked staff on each visit for an update on her general well being. Only on one occasion, this was provided. When I have asked to speak to a qualified member of staff, I am told 'they are busy, and someone will be with you shortly. I fully appreciate this if that was the case, but I have witnessed up to 3 members of staff sat chatting in a very social manner.

Also observed, was the total absence of respect and dignity given to patients, which surely, this is a very basic human right in addition to meeting minimum care standards. On one visit, a healthcare assistant ....date and time can be provided if needed, was overheard using inappropriate language whilst chatting to her colleagues and in the presence of patients and visitors!

As for providing a therapeutic environment and engaging with patients, this was non existent on my last visit, as staff were too occupied discussing their holidays....rather than spending quality time interacting with young adults who I noticed were asleep in the dining area.

Thank you for the post.

I was sorry to learn of your less than satisfactory experience within the Moorside Ward.

Although the Ward is based within Birch Hill Hospital, Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust manages it.

Based on the content of your post I would advise that you ask to speak to the Manager of the Moorside Ward, or discuss this matter further with Pennine Care’s Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) at your earliest opportunity on telephone 0161 716 3178, or via the website https://www.penninecare.nhs.uk/contact/?id=1218 quoting that you have been advised to do so via NHS Choices, and they will do their best to address your concerns.

Regards,

Head of Patient Experience
