"Pain Clinic-Very disappointed"

About: Addenbrooke's Hospital / Rehabilitation

I’ve been a patient under the pain clinic for 4 years. I can certainly speak highly of the consultants but the clinicians here(specialist nurses, physiotherapists and the Lead psychologist in particular) have not the slightest demeanour in showing respect and treating patients with dignity. They are more concerned about the time (clock watching), dishing out tons and tons of leaflets and CDS and irrational decisions in deeming whether patients would be benefited by the evidence based pain management programme. In my last appointment which was a so called assessment to deem eligibility into the pain management programme, the psychologist gave me such an irrational decision and clinical reasoning stating that I would not be benefited by the programme. The psychologist would not listen, then started the clock watching game which several other clinicians did to the point I requested to be discharged from the PMP programme. Being a medic myself, I feel that these clinicians should be strongly supervised in improving their basic patient interaction skills and enabling them to adopt a listening culture. This completely goes against the trust values at Addenbrookes Hospital. A humble request. If your GP suggests a referral to pain clinic ask to be refered elsewhere like Peterborough or so on, never agree to be referred to Addenbrookes Hospital pain clinic. I’ve had a horrible experience and so did some of the other service users I spoke with(Being a CUH trust member myself)

Thanks
