"Saved my life despite very bad odds"

About: Royal Oldham Hospital

I was admitted initially in October 2016 with acute pancreatitis. My odds of survival were really poor and I was described by one consultant as the 'illest man in the country' on that day. Surgery was completed by several consultants with advice coming from Manchester Royal Infirmary due to the complex problems and me being to ill to move. (It would have resulted in certain death). Surgery was not a complete success and another operation was needed. I was put into a coma for recovery during which time I had a heart attack, spotted by a nurse on ICU. My aftercare was nothing short of fantastic, especially from the superb nursing staff and doctors on ICU, HDU and the wonderful staff on T5, also a special mention for my stoma specialist. Since my initial admission, which lasted five months, I have had liver failure, sepsis, kidney failure, dehydration and hap-hazard electrolytes. All dealt with by above departments and the special staff of T5 again who I now have a superb relationship with. Thank you all. I currently have two stomas along with bags and a distal feed, these need constant care and supplies which is never to much trouble for my friends (as I now count them), on T5

I have always been treated with 'dignity and respect', the latest focus of management it seems. What they should be concentrating on, in my view, is sharpening up the discharge procedure. The only gripe I have and admin need to sort it out so patients aren't waiting three days, witnessed several times, so they can go home and free up the beds.

Thank you ROH for all the care, saving my life, and teaching me to walk three times. All expectations surpassed. Six stars for T5.

Thank you for sharing such a personal experience regarding your health.

It’s very rewarding for all the staff you have mentioned to know that you have felt well cared for and fully involved in your care.

The communication between staff, their patients and relatives is crucial in providing an excellent experience so I am pleased the Ward T5 staff have achieved this for you and continue to do so.

Your kind comments have been shared with the respective teams and the senior leadership team for the Oldham Care Organisation.

Thank you so much.

Regards,

Head of Patient Experience
