"Very poor"

About: Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust

Really poor. I was referred to BSMHT by GP and called up out of the blue by a triage nurse who asked me some quite direct questions that I had trouble answering, like 'what support do you want from us?'. This takes no account of how difficult someone with mental health problems will find it to answer the question. Asked me directly what the problems were, but I had left the list of points I had written up with the GP so I could not remember them and I struggled to say anything meaningful, & did not represent my condition correctly. As a result, I have ended up being referred to talking therapies whereas what I feel I need is an opportunity to discuss my condition further and to try and get it diagnosed. This is making me really depressed. I can see that a private assessment is my only option as I am not getting anywhere at all here. I feel that this method of calling people up is really wrong - I find it hard to manage on the telephone as it is and felt as if I was being talked into a corner. Not a very good experience, all in all, & would be unlikely to use this service unless I had to. I'm now looking round and saving up for for a private assessment.

We are sorry to read your feedback. When we receive a referral from a GP we generally offer a service based on their assessment. We do use telephone triage for some services because we find this is the best way to keep in contact and decide on next steps. It may be best to arrange to see your GP again to discuss how you are feeling and to help your GP make the best referral, if they feel additional support could help or a more complex package of care. It can sometimes take some time to offer a diagnosis and this may not happen until a professional has seen you for a number of appointments.
