"Antenatal vs Postnatal care -Serenity Birthing Suite"

About: City Hospital / Maternity care

(as a service user),

The experience I had at the serenity suite was beyond amazing. Given that this was my first child they were very helpful when it came to my labour pains and advised I go home during the earlier stages and relax whereas I was getting stressed being at the hospital and reducing the labour intervals. When I came back in during active labour they were very quick and helpful into getting me ready to birth and the midwives were incredibly supportive (which is needed). The talked me through the whole labour and delivery.

I one hundred percent recommend serenity but the after care I was given in the postnatal wards was disgusting. They expected mothers to get up and fetch their own food even when they were in pain from stitches. Through the night the staff were rude and late too respond to help requests. I had never changed a nappy ans requested some support and they told me they were busy. They rarely checked up on the babies to see if they were feeding correctly and when I was discharged in the morning they didn't advise me on how much milk the baby needed as he was being syringe fed colostrum. My midwife the next day said they shouldn't have discharged me until he was having frequent full meals. If you do have to stay in the post natal rooms I would suggest learning everything you can and bringing your own food so you don't have to rely on the poor staff.

Congratulations on the birth of your first baby and thank you for taking the time to write about your experience on Serenity Unit and your after care. Although I am pleased to learn that you were well looked after by the staff on Serenity Unit, I am concerned about the postnatal care that you received. This is not the standard of care that we would expect from our teams and we would like to look into your experience further. Please would you be able to contact Rachel Carter, Director of Midwifery, on 0121 507 4989 or email her at rachel.carter14@nhs.net, who will be able to help. Thank you, Chief Executive, Toby Lewis.
