"Cataract assessment"

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Ophthalmology

Today I attended the eye clinic in tower block

A lovely nurse administered my eye drops and tested my eyes . After a long wait I finally saw a specialist

He tested my eyes and asked me how my eyes were . I told him I’m not coping at home very well as I live alone with nearest

family in Bedfordshire

I get blurred vision a sense of vertigo going downstairs and I cannot

bear bright lights at all

I also have migraines

That said he told me I need to see my GP and get migraine tablets

He said ii have a very bad astigmatism and doing the op won’t correct it! I said that’s ok

I’ll go ahead

He said no he won’t do it and I need migraine tablets !

I felt totally humiliated and not taken seriously

I will be seeking a second opinion

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback concerning your Cataract Assessment in our Ophthalmology department. I was pleased to read that you were seen by a lovely nurse who administered your eye drops; however I am sorry that from that point on your experience with the specialist was poor.

We would really like to look into this particular event for you; if you would be happy for us to do so or if there are any other concerns we can help to resolve for you, please contact our Patient and Family Experience (Complaints) team by leaving a message on 01872 252793 or email rcht.patientexperience@nhs.net. A Case Worker will get back to you within 3-5 working days to discuss your concerns with you.

I will also make sure that your comments are fed back to the Manager for Ophthalmology and ask they are shared with the entire team, so they can reflect and learn from your experience.

I am sorry again for the interaction you had with the specialist and I hope that we will be able to look in to this further for you.

With kind regards

Michaela Brewer, Patient & Family Experience Coordinator
