"Lack of Disability Parking"

About: University Hospital Wishaw

(as a service user),

I was taking my 73 year old mother who has Párkinsons to an outpatient appointment at WISHAW General. Her mobility is restricted and there was no where to park. I had to abandon her with 2 sticks at the front entrance and drive all over the hospital in search of a space, knowing full well the same would happen again on exit because it would be too far for her to walk. I parked, alongside another 3 disability users who had no space either, all of us in an unobtrusive way, causing no obstruction and displaying a BLUE BADGE, detailing the time I’d stopped. Having attended the appointment and returning to the vehicle an hour and thirty minutes later it had been stickered, even though there was still no obstruction being caused by our vehicle. To my mind, the hospital would be better placed moving the drivers on who monopolise the spaces with no blue badge rather than hounding the vulnerability of my mum who was attempting to abide by the road markings. Very dissatisfied by this today WGH!

I am sorry that you were not able to find a parking bay when you visited the hospital for your mothers appointment. Unfortunately, we face an ongoing problem with able bodied motorists abusing disabled parking spaces. Regular checks are undertaken by our security/car parking staff who apply adhesive notices advising drivers that they have parked inappropriately. They will also speak to drivers to advise them that they are parked inappropriately.

We acknowledge that you would have been anxious to arrive at your mothers appointment on time and can understand why you parked on the kerbside. Although the security/car parking staff have to apply notices in line with hospital policy, we have taken the opportunity to remind them to use a more pragmatic approach where short term, parking does not obstruct other road users or pedestrians
