Unfortunately my husband was admitted to ICT unit at Wishaw General Hospital in October 2017 with Pnuemonia which was so bad he was regarded as critically ill and was facing multiple organ failure. Although this was a very scary experience not only for him but for myself and my two daughters. The care he received within the ICT unit was exceptional but his aftercare when transferred on was unfortunately not the case.

Without going into too much detail and given that my husband is also Type 1 diabetic, the aftercare with regards to Type 1 diabetes leave a lot to be desired. We have approached the hospital with a complaint regarding the care on Type 1 diabetes as apart from his admission in October he has experienced this with previous hospital admissions. We have been notified that there will be a meeting organised to discuss this further but to date (August 2018) this has not yet been confirmed.

On discharge, we were informed of the InS:PIRE course provided for patients who have been in Intensive Care for some time and how they can work toward getting back to normal. Initially we were a bit sceptical in how this would help, however, we attended all of the session provided and feel that it was a real benefit and addition to his recovery and would happily recommend it to anyone who is offered a place on this scheme.  The only criticism I would have and I am aware this can't always happen but attendance as soon as possible post-discharge would be advantageous.

May thanks for taking the time to post your comments about your husbands care. I am delighted to hear that his care within the Adult Critical Care Unit was exceptional and that the after care provided by the InS:PIRE team was of great benefit to you and your husband. The staff within the unit strive to provide safe person centred care every day and they will be very happy to receive your very positive comments. We will take on board your feedback in relation to the time frames for InS:PIRE and look to see what we can do to review post discharge follow up.

I am disappointed to hear that your experience with the Diabetes service has not been as positive and I would ask that you contact our Patient Affairs Department on 01698 366558 with your husbands details and we will be able to explore the delay in arranging a meeting and hopefully resolve your concerns.
