"Shocked at the care my mother received"

About: Dr Gray's Hospital / General Surgery

(as a relative),

I am beyond shocked at the care my mum received during her stay in ward 5 at Dr Gray’s. The fact that after major abdominal surgery, none of the nurses the following day helped her to get ready or to shower, and that one nurse nodded their head towards my mum saying bed bath to the HCA who then said nah.

As well as the HCA who removed her TED stockings without asking and said that’s when you get up for a shower.   Or the fact that after return to the ward, she never saw a nurse for 3 hours despite have a PCA of morphine, catheter and drain in situ. Or the fact none of them asked if she needed anything.

I have to thank the wonderful healthcare assistant who made my mum feel at ease and helped her when she required, but also checked on her regularly to make sure she was okay. What also shocks me is that another patient helped my mum to get to the toilet, because the nurses were never about. As a student nurse myself I found this lack of care and respect utterly shocking and unacceptable.

Dear Studentnursemaymie,

I'm so sorry your mother's experience in ward 5 at DGH lacked fundamental nursing care such as assisting with personal hygiene or demonstrating care and compassion with inadequate checks being made whilst in the ward.

This is certainly not the experience our staff or I find acceptable. I have shared your story with the Management Team and the Senior Charge Nurse from ward 5 to cascade this to all staff in the ward.

I am really disappointed that your mother was not assisted to the toilet nor given the time and respect expected from our teams. I read with interest your mother's positive experience from a HCSW on the ward and this will be passed on.

If you would like talk too or meet with me to discuss further I can be contacted on switchboard 0345 456 6000 and ask for Chief Nurse Yvonne Wright alternatively on e mail: yvonne.wright2@nhs.net

I do hope your mother is making a steady recovery following her operation.

Thank you for taking the time to post this comment on Care opinion which must be at a very stressful time for you all
