"Emergency treatment for Cellulitis in observation ward"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Emergency Medicine

(as the patient),

I lived in Aberdeen for 20 years before retiring to Spain 3 years ago.  On a visit back to see family and friends a few weeks ago I unfortunately been ill with Cellulitis which I had never had before.  The pain forced me to go to A&E in the early hours of the morning.  Being Saturday very early morning I was expecting a long wait however, I was seen within minutes after a few checks with a very pleasant and most helpful receptionist. I was seen by a nurse practitioner who told me I would almost certainly require hospital treatment but that an appointment would be arranged for me to see a doctor.

Seeing I was obviously in pain the very nice receptionist contacted the doctor who was just coming off shift and she saw me immediately.  From there I was sent to an observation ward and the doctor even showed me exactly how to get there.  The whole process took no more than 20 minutes, I was much impressed.

As suspected it was a severe case of Cellulitis (I had ignored all the symptoms for days) which had now travelled as far as my thigh.  The care I received for the next 5 days was excellent, all precautions were taken to ensure I would be safe to fly home, which I was desperate to do.  Doctors, nurses etc., could not have been kinder but also professional ensuring that I knew exactly what was happening and making it clear to me what I needed to do for my journey home.

My experience of the Spanish NHS, including an operation last year, has been extremely positive and I have praised it to my Scottish family and friends, however, I am really pleased to say that the standard of care I received last month in Aberdeen was excellent and I would like to thank all staff for their care.
