"Group Feedback from Adolescent Unit."

About: Riverdale Grange Clinic

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

I was delighted to be invited to meet with a group of patients in the adult unit at Riverdale Grange for some group feedback. Thank you so much to the patients who contributed to a great discussion about the care and experience of being at Riverdale Grange. Below are the comments that we agreed together could go onto the Care Opinion website.

Tim Hunt Integration Development Manager, Care Opinion.

The group all wished that they could have access to wi fi. Some people don’t have a lot of data on their phone and it can feel a bit isolating. They wondered if they could just have access for an hour in a specific room.

Staff are generally really approachable, its easy to ask for help with anything. The advocacy service is really helpful also if you need to raise anything that you are worried about. Good to have someone standing up for you.

Staff monitor all day and the group did understand the need for that, but wondered whether it might be possible to have some private time as a “friendship group” even if its only half and hour.

The environment does not feel like a hospital, there is a real sense of homeliness, comfy sofas etc. Its feels really important that you can bring in your own stuff, duvets etc and you can personalise your rooms. The rooms are often too hot though.

Day to day it all runs smoothly the routines are there which is good. You know exactly whats happening and you know when you are going to eat.

Cleaning staff are really lovely, chatty and cheerful, when they clean your room it gives you a good feeling.

The therapist is really nice and the sessions once a week are really lovely. It seems to take a time after you arrive to start therapies for example body image therapy started for one person after 4 weeks. All the activities are really good: photography, meditation and movement. Always good to get outside and go for a walk.

Dear group,

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback. As a service we are always looking for ways to improve and so we value your opinions and suggestions.

We are currently working with our estates/facilities team in exploring installing an additional router so Wi-Fi is available at 'phone time'. We will keep you informed via the community meeting with regards to how this is progressing.

We are delighted that you find our advocacy service helpful and responsive in dealing with any issues you are worried about.

We are pleased that you feel that the unit runs smoothly and that we keep you informed and that you are aware of routines. We will let the housekeeping staff know that they are valued and that their hard work is noticed and appreciated.

We do strive to ensure Riverdale maintains its homely feel and we know its important that when you are away from home that you feel as safe and comfortable as possible and so we are pleased to hear that this is your experience of the unit.

We do note your concern about the temperature of some rooms. We recognise this summer has been particularly difficult due to the unprecedented heatwave and so as a short term measure we can/have provided some patients with fans for their bedrooms. We have also hired a commercial cooling unit for our communal lounge to make this area is more comfortable. Unfortunately it is not possible to install air-conditioning units in bedrooms.

Therapy staff will be delighted to hear of your positive feedback regarding activities. We do aim to provide a needs led service that includes purposeful activities and therapies. It is because of this that some patients may commence therapies at different stages of their treatment pathway. Our aim is to provide individualised and responsive care and treatment.

We are open to working with you via our weekly community meeting to look at how we can facilitate some 'private' time as a patient group without the presence of a staff.

Once again, thank you for your feedback.
