"Lack of support and advice breastfeeding."

About: General practices in Greater Glasgow & Clyde

(as a service user),

Maryhill Health Centre.

Baby had a tongue tie. Midwives came in and advised different positions to breastfeed etc but nothing was working. Baby ended up eating the top off my nipple. I was crying all the time and in so much pain but no one seemed to care cause baby was gaining weight. I felt very patronized and one midwife actually said ‘ it’s hard being a mother. ’

Then I was discharged to the HV even though feeding had not improved. I begged not to be discharged but was anyway. HV got me a breast pump and advised to pump the sore side. They didn’t know how to work the pump and a friend had to show me. I was up all night pumping the sore side and then having to feed her that after breastfeeding from the good side. I was exhausted and struggling to bond with my daughter due to her causing me so much pain. Determined not to give up I went on some forums and found out myself it could be tongue tie. I also found out there was an infant feeding clinic. I had struggled to get out the house due to my cesarean but finally got out and a person from NCT noticed a tie. I then told my HV to refer me and it was cut.

I still have issues of over supply and clogged ducts due to pumping too much and just from terrible advice.

Dear Distraught breastfeeder

Thank you for taking the time to share your story on Care Opinion. It is important that we hear the experiences of patients and families to understand what we do well and what areas we need to improve.

I can hear that your experience was very difficult for you and your baby. We would like to have the opportunity to investigate this in more detail with you. If you are happy to do so can you please contact me at Pamela.mcgoldrick@ggc.scot.nhs.uk. I can then advise what additional information the service requires to look at this and engage directly with you.

I look forward to hearing from you

Best wishes
