My first appointment with the specialist was at Kirkcaldy hospital. I had a mouth x-ray and a consultation with a trainee, they asked a lot of questions and kept going out the room to talk to someone, they came back and said it looked like my jaw was opening to the point of dislocation and had TMJ and neuralgia. I received a letter agreeing with this diagnosis.
My second appointment was with the consultant, they took a look at the x-ray and said my problems were all down to a learned behaviour and was habitual. I asked whether an MRI scan would maybe show more, they immediately questioned me in a loud arrogant manner as to why I would need one.
I had a friend with the same problem as myself and it turned out to be infection causing bone spurs on the bone causing it, which showed up on an MRI. I did not feel able to even tell them of this, as I was too upset to talk.
They then came out with " you are going to lose all your teeth". I asked them "are you sure" they replied yes. They then said there were nothing more for them to do except give me cream to rub on my jaw 3 times a day. I told them I could not live like this and they put me forward for jaw Botox, which I have now had.
I have another appointment to see the specialist again. I cant work with them, I need to feel free to ask questions about my treatment and why I am going to lose all my teeth.
I have since seen a neurologist who has diagnosed me with cervical dystonia, and given me blood tests and MRI scan. I haven't had to use the NHS for the best part of 50 years and can say I am not impressed with the way I was treated.
