At our 12 week scan (actually happened at 13 weeks) we were advised we were likely to have had a missed miscarriage but due to the size of the sac we were advised to return a week later for another scan, just in case our dates were wrong and it was a very early implantation result. We were then shown out and left to deal with this devastating news. It would have been nice to be shown somewhere private to sit and talk things through instead of having to walk past all the pregnant women waiting for their appointments. Even if we had just 10minutes to digest the news.
We returned at 14 weeks to be advised that we had in fact had a missed miscarriage and we were given a leaflet about our options. We opted for the local anaesthetic option instead of staying in over night and we were booked in for the procedure the following week. However in that time I went through 3 days of contractions on and off and upon coming in was told it very likely I may have miscarried naturally. Unfortunately that wasn't the case and I had to have the procedure. I was booked in and the midwife was lovely, she got me on the bed and set up ready to go, however after 20 minutes the doctor hadn't arrived she paged them and after another 20 minutes she paged them again and they came in at about 50 minutes after I was booked in. Obviously this was quite distressing as I was nervous already and sat in the chair ready for the procedure for almost 45mins (not the comfiest of positions to be in!)
The doctor arrived and apologised for the wait saying they had to train junior staff which was very important. Why was my appointment allocated for the same time as them training staff if that was the case?
Anyway the doctor was very clinical and as I sat with tears streaming down my face they were very matter of fact about removing the sac - the midwife however came and held my hand and without her, it would of been a much worse experience. They told me that it would be very quick as the sac was just at the entrance of my cervix however after 40 minutes, a lot of gas and air and them having to go back in twice it was finally removed.
We were shown out and grateful for the procedure to be completed but having just watched your maternity ward video, it states you have a daisy suite for people experiencing loss >14weeks (we were nearly 15weeks). We were not advised of this and it would have been very beneficial to us - to have just 10 minutes in private somewhere would have really helped us digest the situation.
