"overall experience was good Day Surgery staff are..."

About: Hospital Of St Cross (Rugby)

What I liked

On arrival i was seen to my bed by a nursing assistant who was attentive and kept me informed of what was going to happen throughout my stay was then visited by the anaesthetist and then the surgeon and could not fault the care i received after surgery all staff that were involved in my care were great

Thank You

Also before I finish it was refreshing not to walk through a cloud of smoke and the hoard of smokers on my arrival and when I left. Hopefully the hospital in Coventry which I still call Walsgrave could do with taking a few pointers on how they can cope with this problem

What could be improved

Thank you for taking the time to provide such positive feedback on your care at the Hospital of St Cross and I have shared your comments with the team.

Regarding smoking at University Hospital, as a healthcare provider we are constantly encouraging people to stop smoking as this is one of the single best methods of preventing ill health in the population. We are keen to stop smoking outside the hospital entrance and have tried to have a by-law passed to stop people from smoking close to the building but with little success. We have asked the police for assistance but unfortunately as the public are not breaking the law smoking outside, this is not enforceable.

To try and stop smoking near the main entrances, we have installed Squawk Boxes. These repeatedly and loudly state smoking is not permitted and we are hoping these will improve the situation.

We also work very closely with the local Smoking Cessation Team, advertising their service and have a referral process to them for our patients, doctors can also prescribe patches for in-patients wanting to quit.

It is disappointing when we advocate no smoking that it continues, however we will continue our efforts to try and stop it.
