"Ear ache, the pain within"

About: Birley Health Centre

(as the patient),

I'd been sufering with hearing loss for a few weeks to the point i could not function correctly, i was unable to hear my work mates, family or friends without saying "what?", so i visited my GP for help.

I saw Dr. Flint, who I'd not seen before as im not one for going to see my GP for many things as I'm in quite good general health. She was very nice and courteous and pleasant with me.

The hardest part of getting an appointment is the getting through on the phones at 8.30. and if you do you cant always get to see the GP you want to.

We are pleased to hear you have had a good experience at the Health Centre and your comments will be passed on to Dr Flint. The phone lines are always busy at 8.30am even though there are at least 4 receptionists answering them each morning, usually Mondays are the busiest so that day is best avoided unless you need a same day appointment.

Would you like to be part of our virtual patient group? it would mean you receiving the occasional email asking your views on changes within the surgery, if you are interested please contact me susanbreeze@nhs.net

Update posted by Steviep (the patient)

Continued.. (whilst typing the main story, the internet cut off and i was unable to continue before it was uploaded.)

Dr. Flint suggested i make an appointment with the Hearing specialist, Sarah Newton, so i did.

The following day i saw Sarah who was brilliant, she checked the problem, she was calm very friendly and polite, and even tho i couldn't hear her and was in pain she told me what was wrong and that due to the severity of one ear she told me she could only advise aid to one ear at this time, which she did. She was gentle and caring.

I returned 3 days later after the soreness had gone down for her to attempt the other ear. Shortly afterwards my hearing was restored and all was well. What a lovely peron she is, and Dr. Flint.

I have always had a friendly and professional service from all the doctors I've seen there, Dr. Boyle, Dr. Heatley, Dr. Flint.

Pity some other areas in the health service can't say the same.

Thank you BHC, you are all stars.

Hello, my name is Aimée from the Sheffield LINk.

I have responded to your story as it raises issues around contacting your GP. Sheffield LINk aims to involve and support local people to influence decisions about health and social care services in the city. It exists to find out what local people like about local services, identify gaps in these services and to make suggestions on how existing services can be improved. They also work with those who plan, deliver and assess local services to help tailor services to the needs of Sheffield people.

Sheffield LINk is currently undertaking work around GP support for patients with a sensory impairment and the cost of calling GP practises with an 0844 or 0845 number. We would be keen to hear more about your experiences and if you wish to get more involved in this work or to be kept informed about it contact us on 0114 2536690, www.sheffieldlink.org.uk or find us on Facebook.
