"I have had lots of problems with Minehead Hospital"

About: Minehead Community Hospital

(as the patient),

I am 76 years old and I have had lots of problems with Minehead Hospital. I had to go to minor injuries for a thumb splint, took 3 journeys to get the right size. Whilst there I saw a doctor who was very unsympathetic, said I was trying to jump the queue and my thumb was not as important as a little old lady waiting for hip replacement and they were 'limited with funds'.

After these experiences, I feel disillusioned with Minehead Hospital. The staff are good but I think the system is terrible. I object to filling a form in every time visiting the minor injuries department when my details will be in a computer, surely this is for non residents? Why couldn't I have been given a steroid injection at my local surgery which would have helped me get some relief? I waited 5 weeks for an injection which took 10 mins. Is this progress?

When my old doctor was in practice he did steroid injections in his surgery the same day of examinations! Bring back the old days. This is the first time I have ever complained, but feel justified in doing so.

Hello,

This story was submitted to Patient Opinion by the Somerset LINk, on behalf of a Somerset patient who has contacted us as part of our 'Patient Stories' project. We will be keeping a record of all stories submitted, and all responses from providers.

Thanks very much to the person who submitted this story, which will be fed back to Minehead Hospital. I'm glad that you found the staff good, but I'm sorry that 'the system' has caused you so much frustration, and that you are having to go into the Community Hospital to have treatment that you used to have in your surgery. We will pass your story to the Somerset Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, who are responsible for Minehead Community Hospital, and ask them to respond.

Many thanks again for sharing your story.

Best wishes,

LUCY

Hello – I am the manager for the MIU service in Somerset – I am sorry about the problems you encountered with having a splint fitted and steroid injections, we as a Trust would like to follow this problem up further but without any details its very difficult. I think that you were probably going to a clinic rather than the MIU as we don’t give steroid injections in the MIU.

I am also sorry if you find the booking in procedure at MIU difficult – we do ask people to fill in slips when there is a queue to prevent them having to stand and wait as we do need some details to enable us to ‘find’ you on the computer.

If you would like us to look into this further please don’t hesitate to contact the Patient liaison service on 01278 432022 or email PALS at PALS@sompar.nhs.uk.
