"Clean, caring and efficient... pleasant experience..."

About: Princess Alexandra Hospital (Harlow)

What I liked

The Paediatric A&E (despite peoples horror stories of delays) were very quick in reacting to my daughters condition. They explained what they were doing all the time, always using terms we could understand, and remained opened to any concerns and questions. They also were very confident which made myself and husband confident and comfortable in what they were doing. They were very busy but at no time did we feel like we were in their way or they were moving us along. They gave us their full attention and constantly checked up on us.

The Dolphin Ward was very clean. The cleaners, nurses and food staff were all very well mannered an polite. I often woke to find the nurses doing their routine checks on my daughter which made me feel confident in them. The nurses and doctors in the ward too were always communicating with us. It never took long for a nurse to respond to our call or to a beep of the machine. The range of toys and rooms available for the children made it easy to entertain my daughter for the 3 days and nights we spent there. The food selection was good, and also was fresh.

The

The food canteen had a good selection of daily meals.

What could be improved

There is a sensory room, which was wonderful, but if the nurse with the code wasn't there we were not able to use it. Possibly more nurses should be allowed the code?

With regards to the hospital as a whole, the only thing I feel that could be improved is the entrance. When walking in or out the hospital at any time there are always smokers directly outside the entrance. And the smoke is quite overwhelming. My suggestion would be to designate the smoking area slightly away from the entrance.

Thank you for your response. We are glad to hear that you had a good experience of our service. Your comments have been fedback to the team and a response has been put together.

Staff on Dolphin Ward advised that the sensory room is kept closed because Hospital Play Specialists are required to show children how to use the equipment.

Please bear with us, smoking on site is something that the Trust is currently working on with West Essex PCT.
