"Misdiagnosed broken ankle"

About: The East Riding Community Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust / NHS 111

(as a service user),

more than three months ago I presented at the `accident and emergency` department of Beverley Community Hospital with a badly damaged ankle. My entire left foot was black with bruising and I was in considerable pain. The attitude of the nurse that dealt with me was based on the fact that "I wasn't making enough fuss for it to be broken". I was therefore told to rest it and it would get better in 6 to 12 weeks.

IT DIDN'T.

In order to get an X ray of my still swollen and painful ankle, having received a full colour brochure about how to correctly use the NHS through the post, I `talked before I walked` by phoning the `111` line. They referred me to my doctor so that was a complete waste of time and I had a very unpleasant time with a very rude receptionist who refused to make me an appointment and said a doctor would phone me. Some 5 hours later a doctor phoned and hearing my story called me in immediately. Having examined me I was given a form referring me for an X ray. I had to ring and make yet another appointment which was three days later. When I finally got my X ray - YES, THE ANKLE WAS BROKEN.

Thank you for posting your story on the Care Opinion website. We are very sorry to hear of your poor experience using the NHS 111 service and we do hope your health is improving after what must have been a difficult time for yourself.

Assuming this was an injury of seven days or more most NHS 111 assessments for an arm or leg injury will result in a primary care/ GP outcome. NHS 111 staff give worsening instructions advising people to contact the service if they have ongoing concerns. If you would like us to look into this further for you, we would be grateful if you could contact our NHS 111 governance team on the details below and provide information which will enable us to trace the call and identify what lead to the advice being given to you over the phone. We always strive to to provide the best service to our patients and we are sorry that on this occaison we failed to deliver the service you would expect.
