I had a heart attack early this year and was taken to paisley hospital where my condition was stabilized and I was put on medication. After all the snow had cleared and staff were having to walk into work so a huge thank you then I was able to go home.
I was then called to the golden jubilee in clydebank for angiogram and having been told I had had a minor heart attack was expecting a stent or two, but no. After what seemed an age a a drug induced stress test I was told it would have to be surgery. I was in a state of shock. However the consultant spoke to me later in the day and explained that it genetics that were at the root cause( I had run marathons, cycled to work, swum and done hillwalking all my days). So I was then invited to meet my surgeon, Professor Al-Attar, he discussed the options in detail with me and as I thought he was a very personable man I took his advice and elected for bypass surgery.
So I was admitted to the golden jubilee on a Sunday, and under went the usual prep, the anesthetist even came in on the Sunday evening to explain the pre med she had prescribed and tell what would happen in the morning. I was taken in to surgery at 8 am sharp and the next thing I knew I was in ICU1 and it was 630pm. I was look after all night by a nurse who came originally from South Africa, she was amazing, helping me to move washing the pink ‘stuff’ off me, giving me pain relief as when and at 6.30 in the morning helping me to sit up in a chair! She was a true star and I am only sorry I can’t remember her name. I was then taken down to ward3 east where the nursing staff, including students from GCU and UWS, physios cardiac rehabwere just amazing. The care and attention they gave me, with showering , eating walking.... was way beyond what I could reasonably expect. My surgeon prof al-attar was on the ward on a regular basis and always stopped to shake my hand and ask how I was doing. He even brought a couple of medical students who were on rotation with him and had observed my operation to see me. I think he is an exceptional surgeon and human being. He even came in on the Saturday morning when I was being discharge to wish me well and tell me about the check up in 6 weeks time. The letter confirming my out patient appointment with him cane less than a week after my discharge. Finally many a night I woke up in pain and made my way to the nurses station where there was always a friendly face to assist and make me a cup of tea and a biscuit.
I read on regular basis about the woes of the NHS and as someone who had never been admitted before I can only say that the treatment and care I have received has been world class, everybody from surgeon to cleaner has been friendly and helpful. All I can offer is my heart felt thanks to everybody who helped. Your are without a doubt simply amazing. Thank you
"Simply amazing"
