"Smoke and blood splattered wheelchair"

About: Royal Stoke University Hospital

In the very early hours of Monday morning I had to rush my husband who has Leukaemia with a temperature of 39.7 and vomiting to A&E. The Christie hospital rang ahead to let them them know we would be coming. This did not seem to matter when we arrived we were just taken through to a side room and left for an hour before we were seen by a Dr.. My husband didn’t even have a pillow because they “ didn’t have any “. When he needed a bed pan desperately, I asked the nurse who said she would bring one. She didn’t, so he had to pee in the bowl we had taken with us in case he was sick in the car, she never did appear with the bed pan!.

I also had to tell another nurse about the wheel chair which was covered in dried blood from a previous patient .... This is very serious for someone with no immunity to infection such as a Leukaemia patient, and even MRSA.

As for smoking, there are signs all over the hospital entrances “No Smoking” but it is ignored everywhere and the cigarette butts are piled high on all litter bins, in all the planters and around all benches throughout the hospital grounds.

I hate writing this review because once we were seen by the Dr they saved my husbands life, but, I think you should know about the cleanliness issues and the slap dash approach by the minority (I hope) of the A&E department.

I am grateful to you for taking the time to comment on your recent experience of our A&E Department. As an organisation, we value all feedback, whether positive or not so we can ensure we learn for the future. I am sincerely sorry to read of the disappointing cleanliness issues and lack of response from staff when needed. I will ensure I share your observations with the A&E team.

With best wishes

Rebecca Pilling, Quality Improvement Facilitator: Patient Experience.
