"I’m terrified that I’m going to be left in all this pain"

About: General Practices in Grampian

(as the patient),

Oldmachar medical practice.

I’m 20 years old and feel like I haven’t been able to live my life. For a while now I have had constant problems with my tummy and bowels which the doctors have said is IBS which I will always have. I am now suffering severe back and side pain. I’m in pain all day and I’m not able to move without being in pain (I can’t even put on my trousers without hurting) I have been given codydramol which I’ve been on for over month and naproxen too now which gives me really upset stomachs. I feel like no doctors really listen to me or care about helping me. All they seem to want is to give me painkillers and for me to leave.

I had to go back again to GP because the pain is getting worse and there was a lot blood coming from my bottom. That’s when I was prescribed naproxen and told to phone physio. The doctor talked to so fast and seemed so rushed and it really made me feel like there’s no hope. I had an ultrasound booked but I wasn’t asked any questions about the blood that had happened. I’m terrified that I’m going to be left in all this pain and just be on painkillers forever without doctors properly investigating the root cause of my pain.

When I was 16 I was on dihydrocodeine for about a year before the performed a laparoscopy to laser away my endometriosis. It would just make life a lot easier to think the doctors cared about helping me.

Dear Aho,

Thanks for sharing your story with us.

I’m sorry you have had a negative experience with your GP practice. It’s clear you are having a difficult time and it’s at times like these when it’s important that GP’s, as a first port of call, have time to listen and see the whole you. I can tell you don’t feel this is happening at the moment which is disappointing.

I would really appreciate the chance to engage with you further about this and wondered if you would feel comfortable getting in touch with more information? I can be contacted by email (kirsten.dickson@nhs.net) or by telephone on 01224 558404.

Take care,

Kirsten
