"Offhand treatment at Blood donor service"

About: Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service

(as the patient),

I've just returned from donating my 25 "pint" of blood! Like many people I expect it's not my favourite thing to do but I trot along and for my 24 previous donations I have generally been well treated.

Now I don't expect the staff to fuss over everyone they see who has made 25 donations but I feel quietly proud of myself. However, I don't expect to have the "thank you" card and pin chucked down on the table in front of me in quite an offhand way!

There must have been something in the air that night because the donor assistant attending to me was to say the least, uncommunicative and completely bored looking. I usually have a fine chat with staff.

It took a while for me to donate, wrong arm, and boy did I feel that I was putting this member of staff out, and had to endure much jiggling around with the needle and collection bag. Yeuch!

Thank heavens for the tea and a Taxi!

Of course we all have off days but hey, you guys get paid to do this, I'm doing it on my own time and it's my blood! I'm giving you feedback here because I couldn't see anywhere on your website to do that.

Response from Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service

Dear Dancing Queen,

I apologise for the delay in responding to your feedback. Congratulations on your Silver award! I am so sorry that the treatment you received on such a special occasion fell short of the standard we would strive to deliver at every donation. We have a complaints procedure and I will register this as a complaint. Each complaint is fully investigated and we provide feedback to any staff involved in a complaint and if necessary a period of retraining. To alllow us to do this, I would be grateful if you could let me have your name, date of birth and address and where you gave blood and I will ensure that we look into your complaint. You can e-mail me direct at moira.carter@nhs.net or submit the complaint through the SNBTS website via the weblink below:

Once again please accept my apologies that the service we provided was unsatisfactory and for the delay in my response to your post on the Patient Opinion website. Thank you, on behalf of the patients in Scotland who have benefited from your 25 donations. Every donation makes a real difference for up to three patients and their families. Thank you.

Yours sincerely

Dr Moira Carter
