"Nursing care at Royal Hants County Hospital"

About: Royal Hampshire County Hospital / General medicine

(as a volunteer/advocate),

A patient I support was admitted to RHCH during September with severe neuralgia. She is also diabetic and while she was being treated on the Emergency Medical Assistance Unit she experienced a hypoglycemic attack.

She asked nursing staff to change her bed and nightwear as she was soaked with perspiration but says that she was ignored. Several hours later a staff member dragged her from her bed and left her in a chair, still soaked. The patient says that she remained in the chair for the rest of the night only being attended to ten minutes before the shift attended after 7am in the morning. She tried to move herself from the chair but was unable to, she says that after she asked for help, saying that she could not walk the staff member laughed and walked away.

She also states that it took over an hour for staff to respond to calls from six patients, one of which was unable to get to the toilet.

The patient is still very distressed about this episode and has refused to be admitted to RHCH in future. She has contacted the local paper and PALS.
