"G8"

About: Southampton General Hospital / General medicine

I wrote a really good review of my mum's care even her admission to G8 was faultless. Her nurse should get a reward. So happy and positive the ward was full of laughter and we had high hopes. However it steadily went downhill. What has happened to respect of the elderly?? My mum at 82 was embarrassed to have male nurses all day Friday. All their personal needs having to be met by young male nurses?? The weekend was worse. It's like going back years, mum was admitted last year and I wrote a review praising the staff it restored my faith. However care over the weekend was appalling, only 6 ladies on the ward. Buzzers went unanswered. My sister helped a couple of ladies to the toilet. I witnessed a nurse sitting on a stool calling down the ward to a patient asking if she had a cannula ? This nurse was sitting next to the bed of a patient who pressed their buzzer. She didn't acknowledge it but when a nurse turned up said "why didn't she just ask me?" I said I think she's confused. My mum was told cannula would come out friday. Sat we asked nurse to remove it. He said he would come back. 3 hours later asked another nurse who did it immediately. Drs told mum discharge would be today. I checked with nurse patient transport would be arranged yesterday. Sister phoned today. No idea if mum would be discharged? No patient transport arranged. She went into hospital and arranged another car she knew mum could get into and brought mum home. Staff saying really busy, appreciate that but sort discharge and one patient less??G8 apart from a few nurses who i couldn't fault, sorry those of you who do a good job really don't deserve this review but some really do.

Dear Moira1UK

I am very sorry to hear of your family's experience whilst your mother was on G8. I have shared your comments with the Care Group Manager who would be happy to investigate and discuss this further with you. Please can you contact Mike Davidson, Care Group Manager-Medicine/MOP at Mike.Davidson@uhs.nhs.uk who can then arrange to call you.

Kind regards

Laura White, Patient Insight Manager
