"My Trauma at Medway Maritime Hospital"

About: Medway Maritime Hospital / Accident and emergency

I have recently been operated vein surgery and had to be taken to that hospital on Saturday at 2.20. I could barely walk and my leg was all bandaged to cover up the scars and stitches. When I came in, they insisted that I needed to see somebody because of clotting and I could die if they do not investigate the reasons for my swelling and why i could not feel part of my leg anymore. They said, ''We are very sorry but expect a 3-4 hours wait' and I did not have the choice. I was sat on a chair until midnight before I got seen for the first time. I could no longer feel my leg because I was sat there for so long. I was almost in tears and the receptionist kept making excuses to why I was not being attended. I experienced 2 changes of shift. I heard a Doctor say to the receptionist that he needed to leave early because of personal commitment. At least be discrete and don't let patients hear you. I heard the same receptionist being given the heads up about complaints by another colleague from another department. I have to go back on Monday for a scan now. I am not looking forward to that again. When my partner kept complaining to the receptionist, she said 'We are not A&E, we are Med doc and a different service. You should have dialed 111 and not gone through the advice given by the treatment centre that operated me. I am not a specialist of those tricks at the end of the day,

Thank you for your feedback. We are very sorry for your poor experience on this occasion including the length of time you waited to be seen.

If you would like to speak to a Matron from the Emergency Department please contact our PALS team and they will be happy to arrange this. Pals can be contacted on 01634 825004 or medwayft.pals@nhs.net

Kindest regards,

The Patient Experience Team
