I attended Golden Jubilee Hospital for a colonoscopy to investigate various gastro symptoms. Like everyone else I wasn't looking forward to it and would say I'd got myself into a real state. I'd decided after previous medical issues not to go for any sedation or painkillers and had read extensively beforehand and knew this was a very doable option for me and would be one less stress on the day.
Sadly, I felt the consultant was initially very non-supportive and the exchange put me into absolute fear. However thanks to the most lovely, reassuring and professional nurses I've ever come across they supported me in going ahead without the sedation or pain relief. To be fair, the consultant was then very good and it all happened with great dignity and professionalism. I was able to leave within 10 minutes and felt 100% immediately. I felt that although for most people sedation and/or painkillers is the way to go, no Dr knows your body like you do and views should be recognised and support given rather than what happened. The outcome could have been so different though without the support of all nurses especially Eleanor and Stacey. Overall, I'd do exactly the same again and would happily go to the same hospital and recommend the full set up and team and would like to thank them for all their care on the day including the consultant who was excellent after the initial meeting.
