"Bowel Screening - Do not be afraid"

About: Royal Sussex County Hospital

I was aware that the NHS had a FOB/FIT screening for bowel cancer for those over the age of 60 but I was unaware that the NHS had introduced a new type of bowel screening for Adults between the ages of 55-60 until I received an invitation letter through the post for a Flexible sigmoidoscopy.

I read the comprehensive literature that came with the invitation and had no hesitation whatsoever on accepting an appointment from my local hospital for the procedure to go ahead.

I attended the Royal Sussex County as an outpatient and was warmly greeted by a member of staff who took me through a health check prior to the procedure and provided me with full information on how the appointment would run.

I felt informed, relaxed and soon found myself in the room where the examination was to take place. Each healthcare individual introduced themselves enlightened me on their individual role in the procedure, explained both the equipment and the examination, reinforcing my understanding and strengthening my ease.

I had declined any form of sedation but was assured that if requested at any time during the procedure then pain relief would be available in the form of gas and air.

I watched the examination on a large screen and listened to the professionals as they talked me through the process. I will admit to some pain and discomfort but it was short lived and I managed to breathe through it. I did not at any time feel embarrassed or afraid just reassured and lucky that we have the test available to help early detection of a terrible disease. If you are reading this review because you are nervous of attending an appointment I hope that you will find this a reassurance and if you are still in a quandary then please go to your GP who will help you decide if this type of test is right for you.
