"Ortho referral appointment"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Trauma & Orthopaedics (Wards 1 & 5)

(as the patient),

I was given a referral appointment to see an orthopaedic surgeon, the day of appt did not suit so I called to change the appt and was given an appt on a suitable day. When I seen the doctor, I was told he does not perform the procedure I required, and that he would have to refer me to another doctor meaning another long wait for an appt. The correct surgeons should be allocated to patients appointments to ensure time is not wasted. I feel the appointment I had could have been better used for someone who that particular surgeon could have treated.

Dear Nictaisbd,

Thanks very much for taking the time to provide the feedback above. I can appreciate the frustration you must feel as result of having to endure another lengthy wait prior to getting the treatment that you need.

It would always be our preference to be able to appoint every patient so that they see the most appropriate clinician first time. As you say, this is better for patients and is a more efficient way of working. Unfortunately we aren't always able to do this. Often, the information available in the referral means that we aren't able to say with any certainty that a patient will require to progress to surgery, or the type of surgery they may require, without that patient having seen a consultant in clinic.

NHS Lanarkshire's Orthopaedic Service is under a degree of pressure presently due to high demand and this is resulting in patients waiting longer than we would like for assessment and treatment. I'm really sorry for the frustration and inconvenience that this is causing you.

Kind Regards,

Cameron
