"Respectful, caring and dignified end of life care"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Cardiology

(as a relative),

My 90 year-old Grandfather was admitted for investigations and treatment to the Coronary Care Unit (Ward 4F) Crosshouse Hospital over 2 weeks ago.   Sadly, the outlook of my Grandfather's condition was not good and he was deteriorating.   Throughout  his  admission, he was able to make his own decisions with a sound mind and all his decisions were respected by medical and nursing staff.

Nursing staff were very attentive, understanding and caring to my grandfather and also supported my Dad who was by my Grandfather's bedside during his hospital admission. The compassion, care and respect my Grandfather and my Dad and I received during this difficult and sad time was very comforting.

Being a nurse myself, I understand how  emotional it  can be  nursing a patient and supporting a family in this situation as well as continuing to nurse other patients - all staff were very professional and caring and no stresses were evident.

After my grandfather passed away peacefully, my Dad was very well supported by staff and that meant a lot to me so thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your care.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear DonnaF,

Firstly, please accept my condolences at this sad time. Ninety is a great age to reach. I sometimes wonder if it is harder when you have had a loved one in your life for so long.

Thank you so much for taking time to tell us about your the care your Grandfather and your family received in 4F. As you are both a nurse and a granddaughter your 'report' of this care is particularly poignant. It is a joy to hear that this care was compassionate, caring and respectful and that your grandfather made all his decisions. Each one of us deserves that, and the team in 4F should be very proud to hear such a lovely accolade about the care they gave. I will pass your lovely post and thanks to the team; it really will matter to them.

I hope this healing/ bereavement stage is the best it can be for you and your dad.

Take care,

Eunice
