"My stay in hospital & follow up treatment with OPAT team"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Intensive care unit Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Orthopaedics

(as the patient),

Just over six weeks ago I was admitted to FVRH after pain in my groin and my upper leg.  I did not know how seriously ill I was as I had developed Sepsis.  The Orthopaedic Team and ITC team were all kind and focused at getting me better.  I don't remember much of the my first part of my stay but when returning back to the Orthopaedic ward the team were brilliant.  The F1 doctors were so good at tackling the symptoms I had which included the severe sickness.

I am indebted to the consultants who actually diagnosed and cleared the infection. I don't like to think what would have happened if had got worse than what it was.  I have never been ill in my life except for the normal coughs and colds.  Therefore when I became ill I was so impressed at how focused the team were and how quickly I received MRI/CT scans and chest x-rays.  The level of service and care could not have been better.  The nurses on the ward were always very professional and sympathetic.  As I have a young family they could see how much I was missing them.

Finally Infectious diseases doctors were involved in my care and found the correct antibiotics to treat the infection.  Dr Mhedi took a long tine time to discuss what may have been the cause of the sepsis which we never found out and I was so happy when Dr Baggot had explained that I could go home.  The pikk line which I had inserted  by the radiographers was a blessing as I could have my antibiotics intravenously at the OPAT service.

I really want to stress that this new service which FVRH is excellent and Kayleigh and Isobel are provided care which is second to none.  I feel that they actually helped me recover more quickly as the OPAT service allowed me to go home where I could rest but also be with young family who I missed terribly.

The Antibiotics helped me get better but my children and husband were the best medicine and that could only be provided by the decision to allow me to attend the OPAT service and the the Day clinic.  I very grateful to Dr Baggot to allow me to attend this service and I hope it continues to run as it is a very useful service which FVRH provides.

All the staff at the hospital were so kind from the catering team to the health care workers.  I wish to thank everyone and I am glad that I have made a full recovery from Sepsis!

Dear uniformdk39

Thanks for telling us about your recent stay in FV. I'm sorry to hear about your illness but delighted that you are on the mend. I am part of the team in Forth Valley working on what we call "Realistic Medicine" and an important component of that is remembering the importance of things that matter to you, like being with your family as much as possible, whether that's through flexible visiting or supporting treatment at home. The OPAT service is a great example of how we can continue to care for people in a way that let's them spend more time at home with friends and family. I am really pleased that it worked well for you.

I know that the staff in Orthopaedics, Radiology, Infectious Diseases and in Medical Daycase/OPAT will be delighted with your feedback and really grateful that you took the time to get in touch. Thanks again and enjoy the rest of the summer.

With best wishes

Catherine Labinjoh

Clinical Lead for Realistic Medicine
