"Counselling helped once I was on my own."

About: Thurrock Mind

(as a service user),

I applied for this service because of mental health issues. My husband died in a few years ago. He was an active alcoholic and the marriage was difficult. My children have flown the nest.

I am feeling much better. My counsellor was very good . He was very insightful and intuitive. I felt like I was talking to a friend because he understood issues from my upbringing. However, I am beginning to recognise I am quite strong and resourceful and am capable of handling life on my own. The counsellor Barrie encouraged me to get out and meet people.

I have made enquiries about groups both social and educational and need more social and intellectual stimulation. I do not think I need any ongoing counselling as I do not feel depressed. However, I do tend to go up and down; either very high or very low.I shall see how things go.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. I am always encouraged by the openness of people accessing our service and as you have shown here, sharing some really personal information about your life and the difficulties you have experience. What’s important is that you are feeling better and you have felt understood. Barrie will be able to see your feedback and I am sure he will feel humbled by your comments.
