"Exceptional healthcare and understanding"

About: CHART Kirklees

(as a service user),

I was suffering with depression which caused me to be isolated and losing control of carrying out a normal existence coupled with my increasing alcoholism.

I had previously used Chart in Dewsbury and controlled my drinking temporarily but this spiralled out of control within months, life was just about existing from one day to the next.

In January I knew I had to do something about this, my family and friends didnt know how to help me and I didnt really have any aspiration to get better but would lose everyone close to me if I didn't try to do anything about the situation I was in, even though I was merely going through the motions to please others around me. I went back to Chart/CGL Dewsbury whilst starting a long period of absence from work.

I started to receive help but this was very slow to begin with and I didnt feel I was moving any nearer to any help with my drinking and this made my depression worse, I was stagnating at home with no work and no route forward that looked like changing any of this.

After around 3 months I was referred to the medical team (Sharon and Flo) and things immediately started to improve for me and possible solutions and paths forward for my recovery. This was evident from the first call in the time and care given to me even with my lack of effort to help myself the staff somehow understood my needs better than I did. This was followed up with an appointment to visit them for my medical checks within a week and the support I received was unbelievable. My health checks were done and further to this I was given information on places I could visit that would help me get a detox from alcohol, pre recovery groups to help me understand the intricacies of what I was doing to myself, counselling to help with the trauma I had to deal with years before and also organising help for my Mother so she could have support and also gain understanding.

All the way through my pre recovery my treatment was amazing and I was seen fit to have a community detox. I had to move to my Mum's for this and the knowledge and support they gave to us during this period could not be better. The advice and knowledge was relevant including what negative consequences can happen and coping strategies to deal with problems that arose. Aftercare following my detox has also been of equally high standard.

I would just like to say thankyou to the people involved because they were inspirational and there belief in me to succeed brought me from the lowest point in my life. They enabled me to see what was available to me and have the belief in myself again to want to make myself better and be able to control my depression and remain alcohol free with the knowledge and the belief in myself they have helped me regain.
