"Visit Prior to surgery"

About: Eastbourne District General Hospital / General surgery

(as the patient),

I was not at all impressed with the surgeon who interviewed me at Eastbourne District General Hospital.   they did not look at the MRI images before suggesting I visit a physio to assist me with the pain in my right shoulder, once viewed clearly it was identified a tear existed furthermore I was told this injury could repair itself but was unable to place a timeline when this might occur yet I would still have to continue suffering the pain.   It appeared they wanted to put me off the idea of surgery.

Thank you for taking the time to leave us feedback about your recent experience of care at Eastbourne District General Hospital; it is really appreciated. The Trust strives to provide a high standard of care to all patients, and we are therefore disappointed to read you were unhappy with the recent consultation you had with one of our surgeon’s.

Please accept our apologies for any unnecessary concern or upset caused, and for any suggestion that the surgeon was not in favour of undertaking surgery on your shoulder. As surgery can be a traumatic event for the body and there may be a lengthy recovery period, staff will often explore non-invasive and conservative treatments before referring patients for surgery. This is not to deter the patient from surgery, but to actively support them through alternative treatments that may also be in the best interests of their health, well-being and longer term recovery. We apologise if this was not more explicitly explained to you during your consultation.

If you have any further queries on this or how to pursue follow-up treatment, then please do not hesitate to contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) by emailing them at esh-tr.palse@nhs.net or calling 01323 435886.

I suspect your response is simply to placate my moaning. This complaint is more than just a generalisation, I feel that I've experienced this situation before where so-called experts who are unable to find a remedy to a problem after numerous attempts are more than happy to refer the problem across to an alternative method of treatment to clear you off their lists just to balance the books in their department, does it matter that the referred treatment was ineffectual no, because you moved your problem on to another. Still disappointed but thanks for the courtesy of a response.
