"Some good care the rest was terrible"

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Maternity

I attended wheel fortune ward with my daughter and her son who was at the time 48 hours old. The reason for the visit was during a routine check of baby at Patrice he was checked for jaundice and they were concerned so told my daughter she had to go to trelisk for blood tests.

On arriving there a nurse said to my daughter o yes you have come for treatment this way, I told her no we are here for a blood test to see if he needs treatment, a very big lack of communication was the first concern I had.

My daughter was then very rudely shown to a bed where the baby was laid down and his chest was checked for jaundice the results had dropped dramatically which was great news.

But then we were told that this test is not reliable so a blood test was needed

We were then taken to another room were this procedure was done we were then told we had to wait for an hour and half for results which of course is no problem.

After waiting an hour and half the results were good the blood test results were never mentioned until my daughter had to ask for them the main result they used was the original test that was done when we first got there that we were told was unreliable .

I cannot believe how rude my daughter was treated and spoken too how the first test was unreliable and then was reliable. But most important was sent home with no advice verbally or written on what signs to look out for if his jaundice got worse.

The whole experience of my daughter and grandsons treatment was unacceptable.

Dear Anonymous

Please accept my apologies for the delay in responding to you on here; I am sorry to read of the experience you had with your daughter and new-born grandson when you attended Wheal Fortune due to him needing to be checked for jaundice.

The lack of communication, conflicting information and rudeness towards your daughter is certainly not what we would expect any of our patients and parents to receive and is certainly not helpful when I am sure she and you were already understandably worried about her son.

I am concerned reading your review that your daughter was sent home without any further advice and would really like to look into this particular event further; if your daughter would be happy for us to do so or if there are any other concerns we can help to resolve, please contact our Patient and Family Experience (Complaints) team by leaving a message on 01872 252793 or email rcht.patientexperience@nhs.net. A Case Worker will get back to you within 3-5 working days to discuss your concerns with you.

Please be reassured that I will be sharing your feedback with our Maternity team so that they can reflect on your daughter and grandson's experience and where possible make changes to avoid similar circumstances happening to other parents in the future.

I am sorry again for your distressing experience and I hope that we will be able to look into this further for you and your daughter.

With kind regards

Michaela Brewer, Patient & Family Experience Coordinator
