"Exceptional service with professional and..."

About: Burton Hospital / Breast surgery

I attended the Breast Unit today and although I was extremely nervous all the staff from the meet and greet at the reception to the sonographers, doctors, nurses and support staff were so kind which quickly put myself and other patients at ease.

I was treated with dignity and respect at all times and given good instructions on what would happen next.

My appointment was 9.10, which is the time I was called, this helped alleviate my nerves by not having to wait around.

Next, for a mammogram with a very pleasant lady who again put me at ease, she was quick and efficient and before I knew it I was back in the waiting area.

Next, I was called for an ultrasound scan, it was a male doctor who again introduced himself, there was a chaperone present throughout the procedure which was quickly carried out.

Again, I was asked to wait in the waiting area and again this was only for minutes before seeing another Doctor.

Again a male doctor (with a female chaperone) and also a female medical student who I agreed could remain.

He informed me that both the Mammogram and ultrasound were clear but he still needed to examine me further.

Again I felt I was treated with dignity and respect, i was asked if the medical student could examine me and to be fair I didn't feel under any pressure so I agreed.

After all, medical students are the next generation and need to be given the opportunity to gain experience.

The whole process took just over 30 minutes, my daughter who was waiting in the main waiting area couldn't believe I was out so soon and with good results which we were both over the moon about.

I really don't wish to be critical after such a brilliant service but all I can say is this whole process could have been communicated better prior to the appointment.

An information leaflet would be really good to let people know what to expect because, to be honest, I hadn't got a clue.

I thought I would be waiting for appointments for further tests and then going back again for results.

I almost attended the appointment alone, which in my case with good news it didn't matter but on the other hand, if it wasn't so good I would have been on my own to deal with it and then drive a long distance home.

Also, a simple map should be provided with the letter of confirmation.

So anyone attending the Breast Unit at Queens Hospital, please attend with confidence and know that you will be looked after by staff who really go the extra mile and treat you with dignity and respect in the process.

It felt more like private healthcare and so this has put my confidence back into the good old NHS.

Thank you all on this unit.
