"Very kind and thorough staff, cleanliness still..."

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske)

What I liked

Could not fault the hospital staff at all, they were kind and cheerful. Excellent care. Kept me informed at all times regarding treatment.

What could be improved

Cleanliness was a very big problem in A&E- obviously the most hectic part of the entire hospital, I should imagine (although perhaps a tie with the maternity wing!), but it was in an awful state. A full colostomy bag, left on the floor of the toilet and leaking, was reported to staff at once and an hour later was still there. Blankets did not appear clean or in any kind of condition to be covering a patient. Was moved into the medical admissions from A&E close to midnight on Wednesday, at which point the nurse on duty informed me there were no pillows left for me to have, and for the moment I would have to make do with blankets inside a pillowcase. I'm not a fusspot and managed to sleep regardless of the lack of pillow, but this seems like a rather sad situation in 21st century UK hospital care? I didn't receive a pillow until lunchtime the following day, and was discharged in the same hour...oh well!

Anything else?

It may seem like a trivial complaint, but if you've ever tried sleeping on a hospital bed without a pillow of any kind whilst nursing the kind of medical condition that I have, you would be complaining too! Ensuring all patients are comfortable and rested is surely an integral part of their care on the ward.
