"Dismissive"

About: University Medical Centre

When initially going into the surgery as soon as it opened, with my tonsils so swollen I couldn't swallow food or water and kept me up all night because of the pain, the receptionist told me to go ask the pharmacist first before coming to the surgery and wasn't going to make me an appointment. It wasn't until the nurse practiser heard me speak, as I barely had a voice, that she said that she'd see me right away before her surgery even started.

She was very nice and friendly and made me feel comfortable, she said it was tonsillitis and prescribed me antibiotics and said that it would start to get better after a couple of days. 5 days later my throat hadn't got any better and if anything had got worse so I booked in to see the nurse practioner again who then told me to go home to my mum(as I was at university) and that there was nothing else they could do, just to carry on with the antibiotics and painkillers.

I then went home and miraculously my throat had suddenly got loads better and all the swelling had gone from my tonsil. When I got back and spoke to my mum who is also a nurse at a GP had said that after speaking to the GP at her surgery and seeing the photos I'd sent and the symptoms that she believes it was a peri-tonsillar abscess that had burst, and should have really gone to hospital for something like that.

A month later a rash had appeared all over parts of my body so I booked an appointment to see the GP at the University surgery. At the appointment she said that she didn't know what it was or what had caused it and just said to come back in a couple of days if it proceeded to get worse, she asked me barely any questions about my health and I feel as though she didn't care at all and was just rushing through the appointment. The pharmacist was a lot more helpful, and thankfully it had cleared up and was nothing serious.

Overall, I would definitely not recommend booking an appointment here.

Thank you for your feedback and for sharing your comments about the services received from the University Medical Centre. I was very sorry to learn however that in your experience the service may not have been as would have been expected.

If you are happy and able to do so I would ask that you please contact me via the Practice Reception desk (telephone number: 01225 789100) so that we can discuss the issues you have raised in more detail. This will then enable me to look in to the matter further to review what has happened and to be able to directly address the concerns that you may have.

We do welcome all comments and feedback as we find that it is often very helpful to understand what support has been provided, where improvements may need to be considered or when change is required.

Many Thanks for providing the Practice with your feedback and I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards

Lizzie Doman

Practice & Business Manager
