"Outside impressions"

About: University Hospital Of North Tees / Trauma and orthopaedics

We went to visit a friend on ward 33 and walking into main entrance was appalling there was a man sat in a wheel chair with his leg amputated and drip up and oxygen on with all his relatives around him with a cigarette in his mouth. There was other people sat and stood around all smoking and one man with a can of beer in his hand all standing outside a sign that says smoking free area I really think as a hospital with health in mind this does not give out the right message or confidence in the hospital. This gives out the totally wrong message and should be addressed immediately as this is a long standing problem.

Thank you for contacting NHS Choices. We are very sorry you encountered this problem when entering the hospital. The Trust is dedicated to making our hospitals "Smoke free" sites and plans are in place to make this happen. In line with the Government's smokefree NHS we are also giving patients support to quit smoking whilst they are in patients.

We will pass on your comments to the senior managers.
