"a few serious issues, but overall not bad."

About: Watford General Hospital

What I liked

I was admitted for surgery and a 1 night stay. The staff were very good in preparing me for the surgery and seemed polite and friendly. I was in a small ward of 4 and the staff were always in and out and again seemed quite friendly.

I had to keep getting in touch to book my pre op assessment which was last minute as my surgery date got changed twice but the lady was fantastic at getting me booked in and kept in touch by phone until sorted.

What could be improved

During my pre op assessment it was presumed i had cancer and the pharmacist blurted this out to me but soon changed the subject when i said nothing was confirmed and that during my surgery they were doing a biopsy.

My nil by mouth sign had fallen down and i was being asked to eat before i should have done which i thought was ok as i was quite hungry and they wanted to give me pain relief so i struggled with some toast finding it really hard to swallow then took the tablets then was violently sick. I then over heard them saying i shouldn't have been offered food yet and my sign had fallen down. I was not given any more pain relief either so had to go without.

My first name was spelt wrong on my band and notes which i pointed out straight away but this was laughed off. All very well but my name above bed was also completely spelt wrong. Might sound silly but i thought this was wrong.

Was discharged second day and told about some complications had during surgery. Found out since from the surgeon that i was given completely wrong information. I need to have further surgery which is why i queried it. He was completely shocked. And also he was shocked i came out that day and wasn't kept another night.

When it was time to go they just left me to struggle to get dressed by myself including taking off surgical stockings which was really hard to do with stomach in agony and loads of stitches. I then was quickly got out to wait for my lift in the waiting room and forgotten about.

When we left we walked right past the nurses station and they didn't even acknowledge us.

Anything else?

I unfortunately have to go back for a complete hysterectomy there due to cancer. I trust my surgeon 100% as i know him from appointments with him at another hospital. Am slightly concerned about having to stay in there this time for 3 to 5 days.

Car parking fees are just ridiculous! And then its not clear at all where patients and visitors are meant to park.
