I visited the unit yesterday to get rather a large amount of staples removed. I have never had staples removed before so was rather apprehensive.
I cannot express how amazing the three staff who assisted me were, one in particular. I was in a great deal of pain and this individual let me squeeze their hand until it was numb, kept me talking and laughing and breathing.
I honestly don't think I could have got through the forty minutes or so I was there without this person. They asked me about my life, kept me talking about music and art and books and even when I refused to hold their hand they grabbed it anyway and told me to squeeze as hard as I could.
I am so so so grateful. The nurse who removed my staples was lovely as well and even apologised for my pain which was, needless to say, not their fault at all.
The doctor assisting was also very kind, they talked me through the healing of my wounds in specific detail and included me in the advice they gave to the nurse. I appreciated this profoundly as It is such an underrated aspect of medical care to be included in your own treatment.
In all honesty this was probably one of the best experiences I've had in the NHS and nobody could have performed any better. The jokes flying around, the inclusivity, the humanity that was involved was above and beyond.
My final comment is the aforementioned respect I received. I am a young person who has had some negative treatment in the past from nurses/doctors whilst treated self-inflicted problems. However, these staff did not judge me in the slightest and even made light of it when I laughed about serious matters.
Honestly, I could not praise this unit and their staff more highly.
"Amazing Staff, Kind and Respectful Treatment"
