"GP referral to A&E on Wed 5th July"

About: King's College Hospital (Denmark Hill) / Accident and emergency

Our GP could not deal with my wife's problem. She was told to go to an A&E with no letter. We chose Kings.

We arrived at the first gatekeeping point just inside the public entrance. Symptoms were asked for publicly and a tick was placed on a tick chart and we were told to sit in a small area. After 40 minutes we realised that we had to register at a counter.Nobody told us this.We did so.Eventually we were seen by another nurse at gatekeeping point two.Ths was just inside the open entrance to the registration office.Further questions were asked and a portable blood pressure machine was wheeled in to the entrance and fitted to my wife, while a clearly mentally challenged individual was shouting surrounded by security about three feet away.A nurse rushed and jumped over the wire of the machine which was plugged in across the entrance. We were told to wait for a porter to wheel my wife to the ccu. After 40 minutes no porter arrived. We were given advice how to walk there. When we got to the 3rd gatekeeping point someone wheeled another machine in to take my wife's blood pressure pressure again. This took place in a corner of the waiting room. The machine needed to be plugged into a wall socket so someone was asked to remove their phone wire.My wife was sat next to the wall plug while her blood pressure was displayed across the waiting room.

We were there 4 hours when someone announced to this room that no-one would be seen for another 4/5 hours and then there were no guarantees. We then joined a queue of people to sign out and leave the hospital.I said to the nurse, my wife is here because she has symptoms described as red flags. The nurse said everyone here has red flags.Someone said that A&E only had one doctor and two interns in A&E because everyone else had been relocated. There were no apologies from anyone and overall communication was poor. Finally we simply had to sign a form that said that the hospital was no longer responsible for us.

We have no intention of using this hospital department again.

I am very sorry to hear about your experience at King's A&E.

I will be passing on your comments to our Head of Nursing, Lynne Watkins-Hulme.

If you would like to discuss the issues that you have raised further, I would be very happy to arrange a conversation with one of the senior team.
