"Failure to diagnose - Staff attitude"

About: Lagan Valley Hospital / Medical Day Case Unit Royal Victoria Hospital / General Medicine

(as a service user),

I presented at RVH ED having fallen and injured my shoulder / arm.   I was triaged in ED where I told the nurse that I had broken my shoulder / arm.   The department was busy. I was sent to Minors.   I was x-rayed and informed that I had damaged my deltoid muscle.   The nurse told me that she they were short-staffed.   I was not seen by any doctor.   I was discharged home with painkillers and no immobilisation.   I was sure that there was a break.   After a few days, I returned to RVH to tell them that my shoulder / arm was broken and to be treated appropriately.   Again, I was triaged and sent to Minors where I was x-rayed and told that there was no break and was sent home with no solution to my problem.   The nurse there was very cheeky and condescending - clearly conveying that I was not the expert and so my opinion was of no importance.   I waited for a further few days and went to a different hospital (Lagan Valley Hospital) where I was immediately informed that my shoulder had been broken all along.   Patients deserve better treatment than my experiences at RVH.   Not good enough RVH - poor performance and poor staff attitude.
