My father (81 years) over the past few weeks has been in hospital on 3 occasions. On each occasion he (and myself as his daughter) was treated with dignity and respect throughout.
He was first admitted via 'Out of Hours; to CAU then cardiology due to having had a heart attack. From start to finish he was spoken to by staff in a way he understood and was constantly asked if he needed anything or if he required support. This was from all grades of staff. Even David in CAU who when taking bloods from dad put dad at his ease in talking about the foundries, bowling etc.
Ward staff even went that extra mile making him a cup of tea when he could not sleep or explaining what had happened and what he had to do regarding his health and well being without seeming like he was bothering them. Even when it came to me having to ask the same questions so I could remind him later!!
Dad then had to go back on 2 further occasions to AAU, CAU etc. due to a range of other healthcare issues issues which presented itself over a period of time; again the care was the same.
Dad even tells everyone he liked the food @ FVRH (especially the fruit loaf) and the ladies giving out the tea now know dad calls 'sweeteners' dive bombers.
The staff in all areas should be really proud of themselves and for fully delivering 'person centred care' to both dad and to his family. People can often take the time to criticise and complain but never take the same few moments to identify a job well done.
I have been a member of NHS staff for nearly 40 years but its different when you are on the other side and have to leave the care of your loved one in someone else's hands and are confident that they are doing their best for them.
I know that my comments will be fed back to staff and hopefully within this 70th year of the NHS our staff can appreciate that they are valued for who they are, what they do and the impact that they can have on peoples wellbeing.
"Excellent care provision"
